The collective caterwauling of the usual cast of home-grown leftists has been every bit as entertaining as it has been instructive. They are absolutely wigged out that Duane Sand who as the State Director of Americans for Prosperity should bring into our state Grover Norquist to talk about low taxes and limited government. Entertaining, because all they have to attack Grover with is non-specific hyperbole and misquotes, instructive, as you have on parade the vacuity of their ideas and the ultimate proof of how threatened they are of the very concept of limited government and low taxes.
The Fargo Forum branded Duane Sand an “out of stater” as though there is no more evil sin (although he has paid N.D. income taxes every year since 1988). But, for some strange reason, the Forum, intellectually strangled by amnesia, is never able to publicly recognize that Senators Conrad and Dorgan receive over 90 percent of their political contributions from out of state, nor is the Forum apparently cognizant of the fact that the N.D. Democrat Party would exist as a part time director in a cheap two room office if it was not for the wall of out of state money that sustains it. Which begs the question; should the N.D. Democrat Party even be defined as anything other than an out of state special interest front group?
Dick Weber, unsuccessful Democrat candidate for state senate (who used tons of out-of-state money failing at that effort), had a hissy-fit writing in the Bismarck Tribune and the Fargo Forum about Norquist’s mean-spirited statement, “This (the Greatest Generation) has been an exception in American history, because it has defended anti-American policies. They voted for the creation of the welfare state and obligatory military service. They are the base of the Democratic Party. And they are dying." The same quote was submitted and printed in the Jamestown Sun in a letter from former Public Service Commissioner Bruce Hagen (a Democrat that I like very much, by the way). Hagen also suggests a nefarious out-of-state agenda. Hagen though, had no comment in his letter about the fact that the Democrat Party in the state is little more than an “out-of-state” funded entity. The quote, by the way, is false. The Spanish language article author admitted that the quotation was not Norquist’s, and that the author, when challenged about the quote has admitted that “That’s mine”. Note: check validity of talking points from party headquarters before regurgitation.
Ryan Gustafson is the editor of the Prairie Independent, which is a curious name for his publication as it is published from the NDEA Building in Bismarck in the ground floor office of ND People, an organization that has mutated from the Progressive Coalition, who’s website provides no names of staff, board members, nor funding sources. Is this organization “Independent” of anything but left of center opinion, or “Independent” of out of state financial support? Anyway, his primary knocks against Grover Norquist are, “Norquist’s rhetorical depth is surprisingly shallow. He’s the equivalent of a person who claims puppies are cute”, and “People like Grover Norquist are not good for our state. Their positions are anti-community and anti-democracy, instead promoting selfish ideas that do not benefit communities at large.” Apparently Ryan is unaware that the foundation of our nation was based on extremely limited government, and he is unaware of the well documented, overwhelmingly positive, economic results of low taxes. “Independent” my eye!
Chad Nodland had a blog, “BismarckDims” (not a misspelling, my own subjective determination), self proclaimed as North Dakota’s Most Influential Political Blog’ (which by the way has turned to vapor, as his new site Northdecoder.com, due to the claim of necessity by Mr. Nodland, that, “This is brand new site to replace that other site that broke down.” His Norquist post of June 4 claims that Norquist was an assistant to Jack Abramoff in the College Republicans (Nodland regretfully omits that that was 23 years ago); knows Jack Abramoff (Nodland regretfully omits that Byron Dorgan has some Abramoff connections of his own); Claims that Norquist “secretly route his clients' funds to "surreptitiously finance grass-roots lobbying campaigns. As the money passed through, Norquist’s organization kept a small cut, e-mails show”, although nothing illegal was ever apparently done as no charges have been filed or investigations undertaken; Norquist is best friends with one of the most successful political minds in modern history, Karl Rove; that Norquist started a project with the “disgraced” Tom Delay (never mind that Delay’s legal problems where trumped up politics that are proving fatuous at best, and failed); Norquist spent time in Angola with UNITA, advising Jona Savimbi (who spoke seven languages) fighting actual Communists (an activity viewed apparently, as bad by Nodland).
The N.D. Democrat NPL blog had a little June 11, article (that remains to this day uncommented upon due to the high traffic of the website) by Rick Gion. Rick writes “Norquist was invited by Americans for Prosperity, a special interest group…”, neglecting to mention that his own job (Rick Gion’s) is essentially paid for by out-of-state interests as the Democrat NPL gets less than 13 percent of it’s money from N.D. citizens. Rick Gion goes on to declare the horror of one of Norquist’s positions that, “America should "move Social Security toward a fully funded, individually controlled, portable pension system.". Imagine the horror, you, controlling the money that will provide for your retirement, not some Federal bureaucracy, what lunacy! Maybe Rick Gion thinks Grover should be in a padded cell in Jamestown!
Who is this guy Grover Norquist? Why do the pantheon of N.D. leftists have their collective undies-in-a-bunch over this guy? Well, from Wikiipedia:
“Norquist received a B.A. (economics) from Harvard College and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School (1979–1981).
After leaving professional school, Norquist became executive director of both the National Taxpayers Union and the national College Republicans organization, holding both positions until 1983. He was an economist and chief speech writer for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 1983 to 1984.
Norquist founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985, at the request of President Ronald Reagan, and has headed the organization ever since. Although he is best known as the head of that organization, his introduction to conservative politics was rooted in the anti-Soviet arguments of the Cold War. "I was actually a foreign-policy conservative first," he told an interviewer in 1998.”
Norquist coauthored with Newt Gingrich the Contract with America that cut taxes and government interference in economic freedom, a legislative agenda that has led to the greatest economic expansion in the history of human kind. As for the N.D. home-grown detractors and distorters: when a man is in the arena of ideas, fighting for principles, fighting for limited government, fighting to be left alone by intrusive government, he must put up with ankle biting chiwawas.
What is really going on here is that the home-grown leftists of N.D. are freaked out. Americans for Prosperity is an incredible threat to their statist “community values” and their hatred of the limited government. For some reason the concept of limited government as established by the nation’s founders is abhorrent to them although it is the foundation that has served this country so well for so long. Duane Sand, and Americans for Prosperity must be labeled, denigrated, undermined at all costs! This baby must be strangled in its crib! Fortunately lies, innuendo, and hyperbole only work on the intellectually malleable. The sycophants will remain sycophants. The rest of us can get on with celebrating and fighting for faith, family, and freedom.
